Feeding Guide

Dog and cat with a bowl

Transitioning your furry friend from dry food to a raw diet from RawChoice only takes a few steps and a little bit of time! We’ve outlined two methods below to help you start your pet on a raw and species-appropriate diet.

We recommend starting with RawChoice Chicken+ because chicken is a simple protein that is easier to digest compared to beef or lamb, which contain more complex organs and may cause loose stools. After 3 to 4 days of feeding chicken, we suggest introducing your pet to our other meals such as Breeder’s Choice and Beef+.

The Fasting Method

Our recommended approach is an immediate switch to raw food using the fasting method.

Step 1: Fast your pet for a period of 12 to 24 hours. The best way to do this is by skipping one meal or overnight. For example, if your dog eats twice a day, you would give them their first meal and skip the second meal the day before you switch them to RawChoice. Fasting creates hunger and therefore minimizes any fussy behaviour or resistance. It also helps empty the digestive tract which reduces the chances of loose stools.

Step 2: After their fast is complete, serve your pet their first RawChoice meal. Please make sure to serve it at room temperature to avoid digestion issues. You should do this for at least the first two weeks of raw feeding. After that time, most dogs and cats can tolerate eating their food at a colder temperature.

The Gradual Transition Method

If you’re not comfortable with the fasting method, you can transition your pet more gradually by feeding a mix of dry food and raw food for a period of 7 days. Please remember to offer the raw food at room temperature, as mentioned above, to reduce any digestion issues.

Day 1 to 2: Feed your pet 25% raw food and 75% from their current dry food.

Day 3 to 4: Increase the amount of raw food to 50% and decrease their dry food to 50% of their daily intake.

Day 5 to 6: Increase the amount of raw food to 75% and decrease their dry food to 25% of their daily intake.

Day 7: Feed them only raw food for all of their meals. As of day 7, their daily food intake should be 100% raw.
